Autodesk Revit has been out for long enough to know that it has been adopted as the main BIM tool in the AEC world. What it lacked for many was the ability to push its core functionality in different and creative directions. The inevitable path of Building Information Modeling is the evolution to customize and automate the design process even further in our ever changing tech-driven industry.
Enter Dynamo – Visual programming with computational horsepower. Autodesk has been rapidly expanding its tinkerer, prototyping, simulation based mindset. Dynamo is feeding that beast through rapid iteration, geometric visualization, and computational design. It’s a standalone environment that comes with Autodesk Revit and also as an individual product that is interoperable with software like Robot Structural Analysis, Rhinoceros, and Navisworks. It can be broken down in 3 parts:
Dynamo Studio : Standalone product (can run without presence of Revit)
Dynamo Player – Runs .dyn scripts created from Dynamo
Dynamo Player – Runs .dyn scripts created from Dynamo
Dynamo allows you to move past Revit’s constraints with the ability to play with complex geometries, build in automated actions when changes are made, and create custom workflows for documentation, coordination, and fabrication. It can also save time by programming iterations and repetitive tasks.
